Anupam Kher

The National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) proudly honours Mr. Anupam Kher with the Indian International Cinema Icon Award, recognising his extraordinary contribution to Indian and global cinema.

With a career spanning over four decades and more than 500 films, Mr. Kher has demonstrated exceptional range and longevity across Indian and international cinema. From landmark performances in Hindi films to acclaimed roles in global productions such as Bend It Like Beckham, Silver Linings Playbook, and other international projects, he has consistently brought depth, authenticity, and distinction to every screen he has graced.

A true cultural ambassador, he has played a significant role in taking Indian talent to the world, bridging industries and audiences with dignity and excellence.

NIFFA celebrates Anupam Kher as a global icon of Indian cinema — an artist whose legacy continues to inspire and elevate storytelling across borders.

“I am deeply honoured to accept the International Indian Cinema Icon Award at the National Indian Film Festival of Australia. Australia holds a very special place in my heart. Ever since my first visit and filming experience here many years ago, to being on Jury of AACTA headed by Russel Crowe, I have always felt a deep warmth from its people and a genuine curiosity about Indian stories and culture. It is therefore a great pleasure to receive this award from NIFFA. Festivals like this play an important role in building cultural bridges and allowing cinema to travel across borders, languages, and communities.

I am especially happy that the festival will showcase my film Tanvi The Great. Through this story we hope to spark a meaningful conversation about the representation of people with disabilities in cinema and society. These are universal themes that resonate across cultures – in India, in Australia, and within the powerful storytelling traditions of First Nations communities as well.

Cinema has the power not only to entertain but also to inspire empathy, understanding, and change. I look forward to celebrating the incredible ability of cinema to connect us all through important initiatives like NIFFA .”
